About Us
Samaritan House is the only non-profit in Charlotte dedicated to providing homeless patients a safe place to recuperate after a hospital stay or while undergoing treatment such as chemotherapy.
Each Samaritan House guest benefits from a safe place to stay, healthy meals, and a supportive environment. We drive them to doctor appointments, help them obtain their prescriptions and physical therapy, and make it possible for them to comply with their care plans. At the same time, we help them connect with government agencies such as Social Security. Finally, we give them guidance and access to computers for use of online resources so they can find a place to live and in many cases employment when they leave us.
In this safe environment almost all of our guests recover and 80% of them transition to permanent housing. Many return to the workforce. At the same time, we have helped hospitals and taxpayers avoid repeated emergency room visits and extended stay medical costs, which we estimate would have totaled $181MM.
Though Samaritan House was founded within the faith community, we are a secular organization and provide these services to all who need them. We do all of this with a very small staff supplemented by hundreds of volunteers each year. About 94¢ of every dollar contributed goes directly to services for our guests. Samaritan House is funded entirely through donations, and can only continue this important work with your help.
